Is Your Stoma a Burden

There are many things that can make life difficult.  Lot's of people think that medical injuries or surgeries can complicate your life as to make it a burden.  I am of the belief that in the short term this is a pretty true sentiment.  I feel that having a stoma is really not one of those things for the long term.  It is very true that like all injuries they are hard to overcome and heal in the beginning.  There is sometimes lots of information to learn and lots of things to do, but for the average person who has an ostomy they end up living normal lives.

The beginning is probably the most difficult time.  After you get your surgery and now have a stoma a lot of information is thrown at you very fast.  This is not unlike starting up at school for the first time.  The location is new and all the people are as well.  The amount of information thrown at you when you get into college or graduate school is vast and overwhelming at first.  This is even more so when you have surgery because you are also in pain.  But most people have a great ostomy nurse and surgeon who are able to give that information to them in a good way.  Yes, it will likely be more than you can process all at once and that is ok.  The learning curve for an stoma and its care is steep, but it falls off rather fast. So don't get overwhelmed because once you overcome all the beginning information your curve and the felt burden lessons greatly.

But one way to help get over that innitial hard time is to not do it alone.  Now this can be hard ebcause we don't all know people who have  stoma or are sometimes not able to meet with groups to help overcome this. But with technology we are now able to connect with people from accross the world and sometimes just across the county to find people who are dealing with the same thing. I suggest reaching out and searching for those people and there are some easy ways of doing it.

First thing to do is get on your social media accounts.  There are lots of different people who are active on social media who have ostomies.  They are all of people who are in the same boat as you.  This is a really cool time to be able to connect with them.  Start following them on instagram and interact with posts.  The more I ahve done this the more I have found others in the same boat as me with the same questions.  This is a great way to connect.

Now get on youtube and follow some channels that are all about ostomies.  They can give tips on how to dress, and cool ideas on what ostomy gear to where at different times. I follow lots of people who are active and live pretty crazy lifestyles.  They inspire me to be open to the idea of doing new things.  They also give good tips on ways to go about doing it. I want to let you know that you are not alone.  There are so many people who feel the way you do and have the same questions.  Coming together helps overcome that initial feeling of having your stoma be a burden.
